Kay Kay and His Weathered Underground - Live From 'The Pretty Parlour'

The new project from the bassist of Gatsby's American Dream. This album mixes many styles of music into a fluent, cohesive whole. Hey Momma is the stand-out from the album, with a flair of jazz shown by the soloing on various instruments as jazz musicians would in a standard. Definitely one to check out.

Moneen - Are We Really Happy With Who We Are Right Now?

A few years ago I read a review of this album in my one of my local street press publications. The reviewer described Moneen as a cross between Jimmy Eat World and Saves The Day. I instantly thought 'Wow, that sounds pretty good, I'm gonna have to check that out'. I was lucky enough that my local record store had a copy. I checked it out, and I liked what I heard. Personally I don't think that Moneen sound at all like a Jimmy Eat World or Saves The Day. They definitely have influences from either band but their sound is much more founded in the world of art-punk. Sounds and noise frequently take the place of where most bands would use riffs. The main appeal of Moneen's music to me is the emotion that irradiates from all songs. Whether the songs be loud or quiet, the emotion and intensity still remains high. The highlight is the epic closing track, 'The Last Song I will Ever Want To Sing' demonstrates the band at their bipolar best.

Brand New - Fight Off Your Demons Demos

These songs are from the recording sessions that Brand New did in preparation for last years The Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me. They are a fair indication of what was to come, with a stripped back version of 'Luca' appearing and parts of some of the demos appearing in new tunes. Most of the material on here is a bit more laid back than what was released on TDAGARIM and some of new ideas were really good to hear. I find it particularly to see how the songs have evolved from some of their original forms. Hopefully these songs get re-recorded as full band versions one day because some of the material on this album is extremely good. I consider 'Untitled 5' to be one of the best songs the band has ever written.

Strung Out - Twisted By Design

This is the first non-compilation album that I bought, and it remains one of my favourite records today. Strung Out display their full range of inspirations on this album. The opening track, Too Close To See demonstrates the bands guitar chops with a fully harmonised guitar solo. The Exhumation Of Virginia Madison is filled with great melodies, all delivered at break-neck speed, and Ice Burn hints at the metal/hardcore background. The closing track, Match Book, is reason enough to own this album.

Pink Floyd - Dark Side Of The Moon

This 1973 release by Pink Floyd is regarded by many to be their finest and most definitive release. Dark Side Of The Moon is the 4th highest selling album of all time, and for very good reason. It is easily the greatest concept album ever written, with every track flowing perfectly into the next to deliver a message mainly dealing with the themes of greed and war. Pink Floyd were pioneers of psychedlic and progressive rock music, and this album showcases them at their best in those genres. If you love music, you MUST own this album. Thank me later, then listen to Wish You Were Here.

Murder By Death - In Bocca Al Lupo

This album came out of nowhere at the end of last year and skyrocketed up my album of the year charts. It was headed for the top 10 with a bullet and ended up just short. I could probably even justify positioning it in to the top 10. Murder By Death are a band who have dramatically changed their sound over the course of 3 records. In Bocca Al Lupo is made up a series of songs with connecting themes of sin, guilt, and redemption. The vocals and narrative fashion of the songs are reminiscent of Johnny Cash, and many comparisons to the great, now-deceased songwriter have been formed. In Bocca Al Lupo is a rollicking journey, and I suggest that you hop on board.
